Abundance of Yarn

Ladies and Gentlemen, up until this very week, day, hour and minute, Cherry Tree Hill Supersock has been my hands-down favorite sock yarn of all time. But I have to tell you, Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock is giving CTH a run for its money. Yesterday (or was it the day before? things have been busy), a wealth of sock yarn arrived with the mail.

Lorna's Laces in Black Pearl and Mother Lode

Lorna’s Laces in Black Pearl and Mother Lode

These are from Amanda and Leah who both were deeply touched that I had led a life empty of Lorna’s Laces (LL). At first, I was hesitant about accepting the yarn that has been referred to as “crack” by many many many many bloggers – “your first hit free” is how the Drug Dealers get you, you know. But it’s sock yarn and I was really powerless to resist.

The first thing I noticed (after salivating over the richness of the dye and the inspired color combinations) is that the twist is completely different. It’s smoother, more like Kroy, Wildefoot or some of the other workhorse sock yarns. And yet it retains the softness and spring of CTH or the infamous Socks that Rock. After a little pattern research, I cast on (So what that I have three other ongoing sock pairs? What’s it to ya?!).

teeny tiny cuff

The pattern is free: Staggered Rib Sox.

It’s an absolute pleasure to work with. Now, having only made a cuff, I cannot attest to its wearability. If the twist is any indication, it should last much longer than many of the other “premium” sock yarns. I can absolutely see why people wept for the void in my life. And I can’t thank my Knitting Role Models (a.k.a. “Pushers”) enough. This also means that my trade with Becky was brilliant! Don’t you just LOVE the color?!

PINK BONANZA

That’s LL in Bittersweet and then some sparkly stuff that I will use to trim something. Becky did warn me that she was sending pink…

Now, if you have read this far, you are either a True Lorna’s Laces Fan or dying to try some. So I tell you what I’m gonna do:

I hereby announce the

Your First Skein is Free:
Lorna’s Laces Socky Goodness Givaway

To enter, tell me in my comments (which will be more fun for everyone) or send me an email that outlines in 20 words or less why your first skein of Lorna’s Laces should be free. Be sure to include the name of the colorway that makes your heart go “pitty pat”. Winners will be selected in two ways: Everyone who enters at all will be put in a “hat” and a winner will be drawn, and M (who is impartial, yet understands the Call of the Yarn) will select the top three essays which will be featured in a blog entry to be voted on by the Knitting Public. The two winners will receive two skeins of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (enough for a pair of socks) from Knit2Purl2. Entries need to be in by Sunday, March 26. Voting will happen from Tuesday, March 28 to Wednesday, March 29. Winners will be announced on Thursday, March 30 and the yarn ordered on the 31. I’ve got to get the order in before April 1, that’s when the Sock Yarn Addicts Club starts.*

As an anticlimatic moment, the Red Socks and I have made up. I frogged them completely (I didn’t like the toes anyway) and have now increased to the appropriate number of stitches.

red socks in a bag

The Fairhope Fudge Bag is so I like the socks a little bit more. Sadly, there is no fudge in there with them.

*I don’t believe my sock yarn buying habits are a “problem” really. But M is questioning my self-control and I certainly can’t have that. Plus, Abigail is giving out Gold Stars. I love Gold Stars.

Damn you! You have a contest AFTER I photograph my sock yarn stash? Now you know I’ve already got Lorna’s, so I’m ineligible for the contest. Grrrr. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. katie

Well, I already know all about the call of the LL shepherd sock, having a few socks’ worth in my stash. So I guess I’m already an addict! But it will be fun to see who gets to experience it next!

(I too love fudge. There was a great article in my local paper a week or so ago, about eating and losing weight and stuff. The writer said something really great: “If you can’t be with the fudge you love, love the fudge you’re with.” I agree wholeheartedly!)

  3. Anita

I love Lorna’s Laces Shephard Sock Yarn. It’s the best. Although I have to admit that I’ve never tried Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Yarn. Can we have a 2nd contest for those folks? *grin*

  4. Jill

My first skein of LL should be free because I am an LL VIRGIN. The colorway that makes my heart go pitter-patter is Amethyst Stripe.

  5. Melissa

I love the Happy Valley. This is why I deserve my first free…..
“My birthday is March 25th. I would love a spring-like color for some adorable birthday socks!”
No matter what….what a sweet thing for you to do! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Becky / Knitting Interrupted

LOL! Em you are too funny. We give you 3 skeins of LL’s in one week and already you are a PUSHER! That’s too funny.

The pink LL’s that I traded you for the Lilac Wildfoote was only because almost EVERYTHING I have knit for myself in the last 6 months has been pink or red, not because I didn’t think it was beautiful. The Bittersweet is divine isn’t it? I can’t wait to see you sporting those on your feet eventually.

Your contest will be fun to see who you hook on the drug/ uh I mean LL next.

  7. Kimberlee

This newbie has never had the pleasure to knit with LL. Will exchange synthetic yarn horror stories for the chance! (20 words)

  8. amanda

I recognize those hanks of Bittersweet *wink* That was the LL I sent Becky so she could be initiated into the LL socky goodness. Glad it has found a home! Enjoy your new LL, I can’t think of a sweeter person to welcome to the ranks of addiction.

  9. Rachel

From my experience, LL wears very well. It is a fabulous yarn, and I’m glad you have a chance to work with it. Now the hard part is restraining yourself from buying every color available ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Leah

Would you be convinced if I said I had never used it but sent it to you so that you could try it first? Cause I love you that much?

    No?

Well, I’m glad you are now a fellow addict, anyway! Pay it forward, bay-bee!!

  11. Ann

I predict you’ll be a convert, all right. I *heart* lorna’s laces. My only complaints are that sometimes it does a weird pooling thing… and that the colorways can be kinda frustrating to track down. But they’re TOTALLY worth it. Glad to see you’re spreading the LL Love!

  12. Lorraine

I’ve never even touched the fabled Shepherd Sock, and grow green with envy watching the world knit its wooly goodness.

“Daffodil” makes my heart go pitter-pat.

  13. Danielle Wilcox

My grandmother taught me to knit when I was a little girl. I picked it up again about a year ago and I’m getting ready to knit my first pair of socks. To insure a successful and pleasurable experience I should probably knit my first pair with the best yarn, LL.

  14. Wendy DG

I’m just getting into knitting “real” socks. I did some sock slippers in the past. I liked them because they could be done on larger needles. The thought of size 0 DPNs did not appeal at all. Well, I dubbed 2006 the year of the sock. I signed up for a sock pal and went to work on Opal Dreamcatcher on size 3 DPNs. I’m now working on Plymouth Sockotta on size 2 DPNs. As you can see, I’m working my way down. I have already accumulated a healthy stash of sock yarn. But, I’m a newbie. I’ve been eyeing Trekking XXL and Socks that Rock. I’m reading blogs like crazy to learn about everyone’s favorite. I’m definitely new to Lorna’s Laces. Amethyst Stripe and Flames both look beautiful.

    Wendy

P.S. You can check out my progress on my blog if Blogger ever gets it back up for me.

  15. Teyani

From one Lorna’s Lace fan to another.. great post.. and tell M, its not addiction, its just one of those life changing things.
I’m already a collector of this yummy stuff, so no contest words from me.. only a bit of distant sighing over those delicious colors!

  16. Rachel

Lorna’s Laces should be free because:

Air, water, and all the OTHER things absolutely necessary for survival are free.

Crap, I have to make a trip to the LYS today, and after your post, I’m not sure I’ll be able to come home without some of this stuff.

  17. Katie

Ohhhhhhhhhh…*shivers* What are you talking about? That’s not pretty yarn. *wipes saliva off computer monitor and tries to constrain hands* I think Black Purl is the one that makes my heart go pitter-pat.

    Here’s my essay:
Although it’s my heart’s desire, I’ve NEVER used hand-dyed sock yarn! I’d REALLY love some… You’ll get my undying adoration. ♥
    [It’s 20 words.]
    –Katie

  18. emily

lorna’s laces? ooooooooohhhhhhhh. now that might be worth a shot….{drools}….

Here’s why I should get some of my first LL.
I have never seen a skein of Lorna’s Laces shepherd sock in my whole entire life and it would be the most wonderfulest fabulous event in my life if I ever got some and I would love you forever. ♥ ♥ ♥!!!!!
    (It’s 41 words!)

The colorway that makes my heart go ♥ is Desert Flower.

  19. emily

Oops. I thought you said 20 words or more. And I used 40. Soo..
I have never seen any LL in my life and it would be the best event if I ever did. ♥ ♥ ♥!!!!!
Excluding the hearts, that’s 20 words. *embarrassed look*

  20. Anita

Ok, so if you’re taking addicts as well… My husband could sure use another pair of socks! *grin* I’m sure he would love a pair from the new colorway called Safari.

  21. Janet

I started a pair of toe up lace patterned socks with LL and had a hard time with the lace part. The yarn almost feels like cotton to me. I ripped the socks back to the toe and will knit them plain (hoping that I won’t get any of that weird pooling stuff). Since LL has some nylon content and STR, Koigu and CTH don’t, I’m betting they’ll at least wear better. At least I hope since I have enough for 4 or 5 more pair!
Good luck with yours. The colors are great!

  22. kdk

Regular sock yarn has never given me joy. Free LL will get me addicted both to LL and to sock-knitting. My drug — I mean colorway — of choice is Sassy Stripe.

  23. KT

Lornaรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs Laces, without you there is despair.
    My virgin feet
    would adore Bittersweet.
    My winning sounds pretty fair.

  24. Erica

This knitting novice would be forlorn without the chance to knit her first socks with the lovely Lorna’s Laces. (Jay Pond gets my heart going.)

  25. Jan

Oh, LL! Hold my hand while I confront my fear of DPNs! I cannot face it with a lesser yarn.(Lorikeet makes my toes twitch — it looks fearless.)

  26. kt

For my sophomore sock attempt, the MT. STREAM would surely keep my tootsies cool during the 120-degree Arizona summers! Thanks Emily!

  27. Jenn

My first skein of Lorna’s Laces should be free because you can’t buy LOVE. Daffodil also gives me butterflies and warm fuzzies.

I’ve been meaning to get myself some of that crack yarn for quite some time.

  28. Shirley

    Purple Iris is the best!
But so it all the rest!
    LL/sock virgin I am now,
But not for long, Holy Cow!

  29. Gail

I live on the Minnesota tundra. Socks knit of lovely, warm yarn are the only things between me and frostbitten insanity.
The few sane brain cells that I have left will certainly improve their outlook on life if a skein of Lorna’s Laces colorway Daffodil appears in my mailbox.

  30. trek

My first skeins should be free to make my knitting peeps stop teasing me for knitting Magic Stripes.

    Colorway: Flames

  31. MJ

    Such colors! Beauty
    and pleasure in one yarn;
    I want some more now.

(Buck’s Bar or Sand Ridge make my heart go pitter patter.)

  32. Ella

Lorna’s laces virgin, and sock virgin, armed with needles and pattern seeks yarn in need of loving.
Johnny Depp says send black purl!

  33. Jen

I’m a sock novice and didn’t buy enough Koigu for my first pair (size 11 foot), but I’m sure a free batch of Lorna’s Laces in Georgetown would cheer me up! Thanks, Jen

  34. Mags

This LL virgin deserves some because she’s a (starving) 18 year old college pre-med student who utter crack is knitting socks.

And my super fave colour Berry, that’s all. Just because I can’t get LL here and purple/red is awesome.

  35. Janine

    Saddened faces
    I have contrived,
    Because of Lorna’s Laces,
    I’ve been deprived.
Colors black purl, seaside, and tahoe,
All cause my pulse to slow,
But the color that makes my heart skip a beat
    Without a doubt is BITTERSWEET!

  36. Sheryl

I won’t officially enter, even though I have never personally experienced the luxury of LL. Since my yarn shop will be opening in 1 1/2 weeks, I think I’ll leave the field open for others. We got our supply of Fleece Artist and it is FABULOUS. We have decided to carry this instead of Lorna’s because no one else carries Fleece Artist or Handmaiden. I’ll give a sock report as soon as I get time to knit a pair.

  37. Lene

    “Mineshaft”‘s my desire
    Sets knitbuddies jealousy afire!
LL is nowhere in Europe to be found
    That yarn’s for Germany bound!

PS: Can I bribe you with a skein of this? Yeah you know… enables all, arent we?

  38. k.

I need free LL; my kids sneer that the cheapo acrylic I use for their socks is “so totally gross.”

[Colors: Fresh Stripe Sock or Uptown; either sounds like a good intro to LL….]

A sock knitting virgin – recently mastered double needles, socks next challenge. Help me lose my virginity with lust inducing Lorna’s Laces

  43. Eva

I have recently discovered the joy of knitting socks and of course the joy of a sock yarn stash. I am trying to build one. But I am also enjoying using from it ๐Ÿ™‚

I would love to try LL because looking at it makes my mouth dry, palms sweaty and heart beating faster… I think it will be a true love story ๐Ÿ™‚

Iยดm in Norway by the way (can Norwegians enter?) so I have never seen or touched a LL as they are not sold here.

The colorway that makes my heart go “oooh” is Bittersweet.

  44. Crazy For Yarn

I am DYING to make socks!! I need a good beginners pattern but I feel like I could do this with the DP needles! I have heard so much about Lorna’s Laces and would love for this to be used for my first pair of socks!! Iris is my choice!!

  45. Jenna

In many yarn stores I’ve been sad
I loved Lorna but her cost was too much to be had
    but now this city girl
wants to pop her Lorna’s cherry with Black Purl!

  46. Eve

This very day I bought my first real, non-acrylic yarn. I nearly died from happiness. YOU can make this happen to me again. Only with Uptown can I live one more day upon this earth.
