I completely forgot to tell you that I made a knitting resolution for 2007!
I am going to make 52 of these.
I know that sounds like I’m committing to one a week, but it’s really just a committment to make 52 by the end of the year. The last week of December 2007 may be a very busy time. To keep score, we will turn to the chart in the side bar. I’ve colored in the 52 squares that I am going to make in 2007 with turquoise. As I finish them, I will convert them to the usual brown.
This image will update with the one in the sidebar. If you come across this entry in 2011, it won’t make sense.
I have also decided to seam the squares together in strips of 10 as I go along. I hope that this will help me actually finish the CounterPain and not just let the squares sit around in zip top bags for the rest of my life. But I’ve got some terrible news. Mattress stitch isn’t going to work because they are knit from the corner up and it looks wonky (I tried it last night). I am going to have to crochet them together. Wait! There’s more:
I don’t know how to crochet. But I’m not going to think about that right now.
With the help of The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns, I have finally found a use for all that blue Creme Brulee (DK weight merino) I bought when it was discontinued. It’s the only yarn purchase I’ve ever made without a project in mind.
A sweater vest for me!
Here is an artist’s rendering of what it should look like when it is finished:
Except there are seven bands on the front and it isn’t that color blue.
The bands on the front are made by going P1,K1, P1, K1, P1 every 10 stitches of stockinette and then purling on the wrong side. I think it’s going to look nice. I’ll know for sure when I get to the armholes if there is enough yarn.
I know you can knit all those squares!
I love your artist’s renderings lately, Emily!
Oh you are absolutely heaven sent to bail me out of my gauge woes the way you did on my miserable sweater vest – to think that it was leaving out all of those cables that did me in! (Crosses fingers that indeed, that was the problem and not my own stupidity & blindness to major size issues in my knitting!)
I’m very very happy to know that you – being as brilliant as you obviously are – won’t be making that same mistake with the luscious Creme Brulee vest of your own! It looks HEAVENLY!
And while I should probably know this, what is the Epic Counter Pain eventually supposed to look like?
I love your attitude! “I’ll know for sure when I get to the armholes if there is enough yarn.” LOL!
Nice! That west will look fabulous when it is finished.
I also love the CounterPain – and am almost certain that 2007 will bring the beginnings of a handknit blankie for me too – but it will not be in cotton, but rather a slubby handspun very sheepy wool 🙂 I praise your strenght to knit it in cotton, but I could not for the life of me ;-I
Your sweater vest will be lovely as is Michael’s. A square a week should be a good goal too.
Crocheting isn’t hard. If you can knit…you can crochet. Soon…you’ll be able to do those squares in your sleep. 😉
I like your attitude, Scarlett 🙂 Great Gran knows how to crochet, yes? She’ll teach you. crochet’s Super Easy, so don’t worry.
M’s vest looks fantastic, just gorgeous. M himself looks too good natured to be angry with you, though. 🙂 Always a good quality in a man.
That square is gorgeous! I can’t wait to see progress updates. Best of luck!
Oh Emily – go for it! Those squares are so lovely. It will be an amazing finished product.
Crochet isn’t really very hard at all, and you’ll only need a single crochet stitch to hook it together. Perhaps we can do it long distance (like we did the drop spindle.. grin)
Having comments open on only one post at a time defintely does not work well with my fits-and-starts blog reading, but I wanted to say how great M looks in his vest! And if that’s as “mad” as he gets at you, you guys must have a pretty blissful marriage.
Sounds like you have two resolutions: make 52 counterpain squares and learn to crochet. Good luck with both!
That counterpane is going to look lovely when you’re finished. I know you can finish those squares. Learning to crochet enough to join the squares shouldn’t be hard.
