I have spent the last few days trying out all of my arts and crafts projects for camp. The only one that is really giving me trouble is the dough/clay/sculpture recipe. I need one that the kids don’t have to paint. I’ve been through four test batches and this morning hit on the idea of coloring the dough with kool-aid. It works for yarn, right? And it would smell fruity and delicious! I tried it with my next batch (a bake-to-harden recipe). Unfortunately, kool-aid does not do well in the oven.
That used to be a piggy, a kitty, a pumpkin and a bunny.
I ate 4 mini Milky Ways to console myself (I feel a little ill). Then I found two more recipes to try. At least the macaroni looks great!
For the 3-4s necklaces. Tip: tape one end of their string to the table so all of the beads don’t come off when more are put on.
Oh, and some of my sock yarn is here!
Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock in “Pioneer” and “Purple Iris” and Claudia’s in “Donna’s Favorite.”
Between you and me, I don’t remember ordering the Purple Iris. I mean, it’s purple, brown and green. All of those together in one yarn. That just doesn’t sound like a combination that would make me say “Oooh, pretty!”
Maybe not having sock yarn in so long has clouded my ordering skills?
PS Leah wrote to say she used Purple Iris on her first (FIRST) Clapotis. Having seen her picture, I feel much better about the whole thing!
Yarn: lovely.
Macaroni: excellent.
Dough: doh!
You’d be surprised on the Purple Iris. I knit my first Clapotis in Purple Iris Lion and Lamb, and I think it’s quite lovely!
Have fun with the other crafts!
The purple iris is very pretty and pioneer looks so sophisticated. Show us what you did with the macaroni, they look sweet too!
How did it go with William Henry at the vet? Will they adopt him? 🙂
I love the purple iris yarn, purple, brown and green all in one sounds like a real winner!
All the new yarn is pretty! How does burned kool-aid smell?
Now I can’t stop thinking about Milky Ways! 😛
Food coloring in the dough works GREAT! I use the paste kind. I do this all the time for the boys as it is really quick when you don’t have time to frost/decorate the cookies. Plus, it is a novelty to have a completely green T Rex. Oh, it will darken upon cooking.
I love the purple iris, it reminds me of tourmaline.
Lovely stuff!
I used to have a really good recipe for playdough when I was teaching preschool, but I lost it. I know it had water, salt, and flour in it. I don’t think you could bake it though.
That yarn looks yummy! I have no ideas on the clay recipe!
What fun macaroni ! the kids will love it. – the yarn is very pretty – and we’re all waiting to see what your socks will look like (grins)
You know, it could be a good thing that the koolaid didn’t work for the playdough, because when something smells really really good, little guys tend to put all of it in their mouths (big grins) ho ho ho –
I used to use the paste food coloring as well – (some will come off on their hands..) It gives great bright colors.
Yeah, I definitely echo what everyone else is saying – you’ll love the Purple Iris colorway. Sooooo classy.
I love the Kool-Aid chronicles! I hope the colored macaroni project works out well for you. Have fun with all the kids at camp. Is it camp or VBS or what?
I’m sure the kids will love the crafts — any excuse to get messy hands is most welcome. And your yarn is lovely. Every single last skein of it. I went on a binge right after the Toasty Toes matches…just had to be sure!
I think you need to be on high alert for any other sock yarn that arrives that you don’t remember ordering. You may be developing secondary personalities that are placing sock yarn orders without your being aware of it. And while might be great in some ways — hey, more yarn! — I have to imagine it could also be a little disconcerting.
The macaroni necklaces look fun! Too bad I’m probably well beyond the age group that could get away with wearing them.
Oh, nice sock yarn! I like the Purple Iris, but then I like purple anyway. You have some fun projects lined up for camp.
You know, if it bothers you greatly, I would be more than willing to take that nasty Purple Iris away. Or any other distasteful sock yarn you don’t remember ordering.
Oh. And you can throw that knitter wire sculpture sample into the box as well!
Thank you very much.
