GBS

I’ve finished the leg of the first of the GBS (Great Big Socks).

brown sock leg

8 inches. I figure since he’s taller than the average guy, his sock leg should be too.

I like the broken rib: it’s interesting but not too interesting, making it a good choice for a Manly Man sock. I’m going to continue the pattern down the foot so I don’t get bored and fantasize about other projects (smaller projects) on the endless trek to the toe.

I’ve also finished the back of the blue vest.

It’ll look better when it’s blocked.

I’ve got plenty of yarn, by the way. I should have a skein left over.

And I set the toaster on fire.

smokin'

Not my finest hour.

I put the bread in, set the timer and wandered away. After what had seemed like a really long time, the toaster hadn’t gone off yet so I wandered back in to see the smoke. And the flames when I opened the door and let in the oxygen like a dope. It was very exciting. And smelly.

To round off the week, I seem to have picked up the flu. Which makes me very unhappy. Tylenol is my friend.

First Dad and the taco shells, then me and the taco shells, and now you and toast. We are quiet the family for toaster pyrotechnics. Hope you are better by Wednesday night!

And again I say…. how can a girl with the flu be so FUNNY?! The toaster oven! Girl, get a normal toaster. I was broiling some garlic bread in my ex-inlaws oven once (like 20+ yrs ago) and did the EXACT same thing except we couldn’t throw the oven out in the yard. I was so embarrassed.

    Oy, the flu! Poor baby!

Setting things on fire is exciting, isn’t it? Though probably the kind of excitement I could live without!

Might be time to change the batteries in your smoke detector! That’s a pretty funny pic, though, reminds me of Office Space and abusing the printer.

I am sorry about the toaster (and glad no one was harmed) but that picture is hilarious 😉
The manly GBS socks are looking fantastic 😉
The flu – nasty business there…been there, done that and still have that lingering….tylenol and hot tea girl…hope you feel better soon.

I actually had to go to a toaster oven for similar reasons. I kept putting bagels in a regular toaster, figuring I’d make it back in time to help pop them up. I never did. I’m amazed I never caught the kitchen on fire. At least we had good smoke alarms.

  16. Lene

    Your toaster is toast(ed)?

That is a really good and funny picture of the oozing toaster on the lawn 🙂

The brown socks look really warm and cozy. I feel your pain about knitting really large socks, maybe you should try some thicker sock yarn?

Oh, Emily, I hope you feel better soon! If it makes you feel better in an ego sense, I have killed two Cuisinart toaster ovens, and the third (not-so-cheerfully supplied by the manufacturer) is on its last leg.

Love the broken rib on the manly sock. I like broken rib in general.

    Sending get-well wishes!

  18. Melissa

Emily, that is the FUNNIEST picture! I just ruined my instant-read (but don’t leave it in the oven, it’s not made for that) thermometer last night! I kind of forgot that it was in the oven. It was a melted mess and I grabbed it with my bare hands and pulled it out of the chicken! Yikes!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  19. Jen

I hope you are feeling better soon! And, I hope when you do feel better, that you go buy yourself a really nice toaster! 🙂

    Have a great weekend!

  20. Also Melissa

You made me squirt cranberry juice out my nose! Hehehe.

Btw: You’re not responsible for anything that you do when you have the flu. I grant you full sicky absolution. 🙂

  21. amanda

uhm, i probably shouldn’t laugh but i do love the pic of the smoldering toaster on the lawn. i have a great mental image of a flaming toaster being thrown out the back door, sailing through the air then landing with a thud. am i close?

  22. kt

Yah, the toaster-oven as an entity seems to have a rating that always hovers in the Somewhat Evil category. This theory is borne out by the end scenes in Time Bandits…”Don’t Touch It, It’s Evil!”. Rent it–it’ll make you feel better.

I myself belong to the clan of the Dry-Pot-Boilers. Seth always has to check to see if we’re dry-roasting the veggies instead of steaming them or if I’m just boiling the kettle for morning coffee.

The Chocolate socks are yummy, and I hope your flu goes away fast. Stay hydrated and sleep.

  23. Tonni

Girl, you are so funny! Had to read this post to my hubby… made my day, but I hate to hear you picked up that flu bug. I hope you feel better soon… you need some chicken soup.

  24. Sue

Oh dear! I hope you feel better soon, Emily! I’m also sorry to hear about your poor departed toaster oven. Poo.

The socks look great! I especially love the color of the vest you are working on.

  25. Rachel

If it makes you feel any better, that photo of the toaster has had me laughing for several minutes. I’m not sure whether it’s good or bad to know that your pain brings someone else joy (eek, that sounds worse than I mean, but I hope you know what I mean).

I’m glad you talked your huge-footed friend into wool. Cotton socks, particularly at that size, would probably have ended up just a big old mess.

I hope your flu is on the way out. Feel better!

  26. Ruth

Sorry to hear that you aren’t well. Thank you for the picture of the toaster! That’s the funniest thing I’ve seen all day. Mind you it is only 7.30am.

    That sock is enormous!

  27. Gracie

Ha ha ha… I know it was a trauma, but it looks funny after the fact. But, it is an excuse to buy a fancy schmancy toaster.

  28. Teyani

oh no toaster-disaster. I’ve done the same thing, so don’t feel too bad. we all do that now and then 😀
    love those manly socks.
