Shut and Open

zelda and counterpain squares

This is my last day of vacation. Back to toys tomorrow.

Last year, Yarn Miracle bought a new couch and chair (plus an extra set of slipcovers because of cats), a new laptop (twice because of aforementioned cats), and crossed the $1,000 mark in cumulative donations to the Baldwin County Humane Society ($1,115 since the shop opened).

This year. This year, Yarn Miracle will help rescue an elephant, spay or neuter half a dozen cats, continue to support the Humane Society, and convince you all not to buy eggs from factory farms.

And I’m going to do it with knitting.

I have big plans, Knitters! Big, big plans.

Ok, I’m a city girl! Where does one get eggs in the city if not from the grocer?

M is for Monkey has one more leg to go! He is powder blue with taupe as the accent color! The monkey toes are brilliant, by the way!

Happy New Year Em, to you and yours,
    Sheila

I’ll answer Sheila’s egg question here too:

Chances are that you can find eggs more easily at
your grocer than I can – you’ll just have to read labels to check for
humane certification (Animal Welfare Approved is my favorite –
American Humane is another good one). You may need to do some
googling to figure out which brand your store carries is the best
choice for you. Failing that, find the hippie grocery store and ask
about local! I suspect that a gourmet-type grocer or maybe even a
health food store will also be able to point you in the right
direction. ‘Cage free’ or ‘free range’ on a grocer’s label can be
misleading although it’s better. ‘USDA Organic’ does have an animal
welfare component, but watch your brands. Many of the ‘organic’ eggs
on grocery shelves are still produced at factory farms. How to find
eggs if you’re citified is one of the topics I’ve got on my list.

I will say, finding someone who keeps yard chickens is going to be a
whole lot cheaper than humane eggs from the store. I’ll also say that
there is a reason that cheap eggs are so cheap and that reason is not
    pretty.
