hate carried the day

I have been apolitical in my blogging (people show up here to read about knitting, not politics), but this has gone Far Enough.

I am tired of being called an idiot for voting for the President in this election. I have plenty of excellent reasons for my choice and I feel no need to defend my decision in this forum.

I am sick of hearing how this country’s government has been “hijacked by fascists.” Nobody hijacked anything. Last time I checked the US was still a democracy. The majority still rules. I and 52% of the people who bothered to show up on Tuesday voted for George Bush. Are you going to tell me that I (and 52% of voting Americans) are all incompetent, uneducated morons who are completely devoid of free will and conscience and have no business in the booth? I have as much of a right to my opinion as you do. And I have as much of a right to be able to express it without being called names as you do.
I am sorry your guy lost. I am sorry that you are upset about it. But leave off the hate-mongering please (I’m looking at you, Michael Moore).

PS For those of you who are upset about the Marriage Ammendments: I am not ecstatic about those either. But if that judge in Massachusets hadn’t taken to making laws instead of interpreting them, there wouldn’t be such a backlash now. The fact that they were overwhelmingly passed makes me think that focusing on domestic partnerships/civil unions may be the better plan. Or better yet, just fix the problems with inheritance, hospital visitation and health insurance so that marriage stays between you, your spouse and God (or the Universe or whatever). Leave the government out of it. But don’t be mad at people for defining marriage as they see it. This is America. We have plenty of opinions to go around.
