I’m afraid that my gift to you this year has some assembly required.
Surprise! It’s a garland!
Smitten (a Holiday Garland) is now available as a free download at KnitPicks.com.
I knit a mitten a day for most of October. After I memorized the pattern (around mitten number 6), they took me about an hour each. Marcia, my Top Secret Test Knitter, says that her first one took about twice that long – but she was correcting my mistakes at the same time. Long Story Short: If you want 24, it’s time to get started!
This was my “Guess what’s next?” picture that I never posted.
If you don’t need an advent calendar, put letters on the mittens and spell something festive or seasonal like “Let it snow!” Or use them for ornaments. Or money holders. They are about 4.5″ from finger tip to cuff so small toys, treats or jewelry will fit neatly inside.

Happy holidays! If you make something with the pattern, I’d love to see it in the Smitten Flickr Group.
Hmm…that just *might* induce me to pull out some needles and yarn and see if I remember how to do that there knitting! Too cute!!
i do not knit, but i am a beginner with crochet. this year, i want to have a more simple christmas tree. looking at your garland, i realized, i can make long chains for our tree 🙂 thanks for the inspiration 🙂
This is beautiful!!!! I think I just found my next knitting project 🙂
Adorable!! What a great idea, Emily.
Super cute! I like the fun colors too!
This pattern is SO MUCH FUN to knit. Oh, the possibilities!!!!
hmmm…mittens have no religious symbolism (that I know of) I could totally get away with knitting a bunch in blue and white and call it a Chanukah garland…Next year of course. Chanukah starts Dec 1 this year. YIKES!
OOh, little ornaments I could knit for present garnishes, nice!
how cute!!!
What a great idea, too cute! Plus it can stay all winter!
So cute! I love the Smitten! 🙂
Perfect name for these.
My first thought was “I think I need to learn to knit.” I don’t know if my personal knitter can keep up with my requests seeing as how she has a life outside of my suggested knitting projects.
What a great idea!! *runs off to download the pattern*
The mitten garland is darling! As slow a knitter as I am, and with so much other gift knitting pressing for my time, I know I’d not get enough knit for a garland. However, this pattern is very timely for me. I’m involved in an online ornament swap drawing. The mitten, which will make a cute ornament in itself, will be a good size to tuck a smaller ornament inside, and maybe even a candy treat. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
So cute! Love, love, love!

ACK! I want to learn to knit just so I can make this. I just LOVE it!! Totally LOVE IT!!! You are so talented emily.
So cute, pattern is downloaded and ready to print. Not sure it will be done by *this* Christmas…
Thank you.
I love this, Emily! What an adorable idea, and I know just the colors I want to use. This year, a few for present decoration, and next year an advent calendar for my nephew. Thanks so much for sharing, I’ll post pictures once I’m done!
OH MY GOD. I have to make this right now now now now now now.
I finished my first one and added it to Ravelry and the flickr group. Here’s the link on Ravelry in my projects: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/talkstostrangers/smitten-a-holiday-garland
…pant…pant…pant…Done! Will try to post a pic tomorrow, since it’s dark out now! The next challenge… finding enough things to fill 24 little mittens 🙂
