Why are there so MANY?

The mailman was good to me and brought me a Treat from KT (the one in VA not the one in AZ)! She met Ann and Kay in Actual Person and was sweet enough to get me a signed copy of Mason-Dixon Knitting (which she even wrapped before mailing)!

my name in other people's handwriting

Look! My name! Written by Famous Knitters!

Thanks so much, KT, you absolutely rock (16 days)!

Let’s take a moment and review a record-breaking (for me) collection of Works in Progress.

honeydew top un-named orange socks 4th counterPane square
MDK hand towel 2-up red socks another dishcloth

From left to right we have: the Honeydew Top (almost finished with the waist decreases), the At Your Own Risk Socks (about to the toe), the 4th square of the Epic Counterpane, a Moss Grid Hand Towel (from MDK), those red socks, and another dishcloth. I have been trying to come to terms with this — Oh for crying out loud. I just realized that I have another one: my first LL socks in Black Pearl. I had to hide them from myself because they are all I want to work on and I have Project Spectrum commitments. It is Unusual for me to have this many In Progress things at a time and I find it a little bit upsetting. I have spent way too much time justifying the situation. Wanna hear? Of course you do:

  • The Honeydew Top is my big project. I only have one so that’s OK.
  • The socks are for Project Spectrum, technically they are a “small project” so they are OK.
  • The Epic Counterpane is already going to take a billion years to complete so shouldn’t even be figured into the list of “what I am working on” so that’s OK.
  • The linen hand towel is because my Mom is visiting. The hand towels are Great Gran, Mom and my current KAL. It can’t be helped so that is OK.
  • I think the 2-up red socks are still too big (I might hate them). They don’t have to be finished until July. That is not OK, but I am going to live with it.
  • Dishcloths are now “Knitting for Places Where My Knitting Might Get Dirty.” You gotta have at least one of those in case you have to knit in a sewer or something. So that’s OK.
  • The LL socks (not pictured) are my travel project (they are on circs). Gotta have a travel project. So that’s OK.

And all of that is great. Unfortunately, now there’s this:

Bobbi Bear and his parts

That’s Baby Bobbi Bear from Blue Sky Alpaca.

I’ve got to make baby presents. You can’t make them sweaters when they are born at this time of year. And their parents know I knit. Why don’t I just make booties? I really don’t know. I. Just. Don’t. Know.

Glad I’m not the only one! I was just going through my projects today, and I realized that I needed to start another one — because I have to go to my husband’s hockey game tonight, and none of the projects I’m working on are acceptable for hockey knitting. So I went out and bought yarn for yet another baby sweater. Sad, but true…

My Supreme Pleasure. And now on to more important things. I just noticed your new furniture in your sidebar. THUMP!!!! That was me hitting the floor. I LOVE IT. Seriously. Man, if it is haunted All The Better. If you see a Mysterious UHaul in front of your house, it’s me coming to steal your furniture. Cannot wait for the lowdown on how you scored that. God I hope they ship. Right up my alley. 16 days WOOOOOOT!

Yay! Sounds like the book made you happy.
Good collection of WIPs you have there. I think the Honeydew Top and the PS socks are my faves. (I seem to analyze my WIPs every day, don’t worry.)
About the baby dilemma…maybe a nice cottony blanket would be nice? That’s what came to my mind.

It all makes perfect sense to me Emily. And those bears. Just. Plain. Adorable. I can see why you couldn’t resist! 🙂

Oh, but Bobbi Bear is so cute and so fun to knit! And it will be fun for the kid waaaay after the booties would be outgrown. I think it’s a wise, wise choice.

You are too too funny Em. But you know what? THIS TIME you have me beat with the # of projects in the works! I’m so glad its you instead of me! Love them all, especially the counterpane.

I love your rationale! Just focus on one or two — get them finished and you’ll be motivated to keep going with the rest. The cloth is not big — you’ll finish it soon. But, then again, I have a big WIP list!

hehe. I love hearing other people’s rationalizations since they make me feel better about my own. Focus on the At Your Own Risk socks since April is on it’s way out. And the honeydew top so you can wear it. The rest will fall into place.

Funny Emily! My answer to your post would have been.. ‘oh, you mean that’s all you have going right now? yikes, you’d better start some more!”
I know, I know… but I have my various projects (sock- difficult, socks – easy, mindless stockingette, and humongo-going-to-take-forever stuff, as well as christmas, K gifts, baby gifts.. oh dear.. It all depends on what you’re in the mood for.
Have fun with those tiny teddies. My youngest daughter is now 16, and she still has the baby gift bunny that was hand made for her. After all, how many sweaters can one baby wear?

What I want to know is who is in the lead in the hand towel knitalong? Are you going to redeem yourself after your humiliating defeat on the scarf KAL? You certainly do seem to be handicapping yourself with all those other projects. 🙂

It had never occurred to me that I might one day be trapped in a sewer with my knitting…I must put a could-get-dirty project on the needles immediately!

Emily, when your WIP’s were still loading I had hope that there were others out there as bad as me; I think I have to rip out some of mine and pretend they don’t exist – you have such a pretty pile of almost (and there is an end in sight) finished things. I love the bear. I think it is such a perfect baby gift – so much cuter than booties. Good luck with your projects; you are progressing so well!

  12. Karen

Hmmm, all your reasons make perfect sense to me. Especially the sewer one. 🙂 They’ll all get done in good time.

I vote for the sweet little bear as a gift! Too cute!! Impressive list of WIP!! Can’t wait to see the finished honeydew top!! VERY jealous of your M/D autographed book! I was not able to attend the book signing at KN in Helena…boo hoo!! I heard that is was a BLAST!!

  14. Lene

I like your projects in progress.. so many different ones. Much better than my 2 epic shawls and 2 epic sweaters… *sigh*

I love the bobbi bear pattern, they look so cuddly 🙂

  15. Jenn

Actually, someone wrote into our SNB listserv as a mother and said that she wouldn’t want booties because they’re impossible to keep on tiny feet. So the bear is more practical, cuter, and probably more fun to make.
